John J. Murphy Jr. is managing general partner of Murphy & Partners L.P.
Prior to forming Murphy & Partners, Mr. Murphy was one of the founding
partners of Adler & Shaykin, a New York-based investment firm
(1983-1987) and was Vice President of Citicorp Venture Capital, Ltd., and
Citicorp Capital Investors Ltd., the venture capital and equity investment
subsidiaries of Citicorp and Citibank (1975-1983).
Mr. Murphy serves or has served as a director on all of
M&P’s portfolio companies. He presently serves as chairman of
Celebration Events (a party-rental company) and Mosaica Education (a
manager of educational services to the K-12 sector). He has also served as
chairman of American Higher Education Development Corporation (an owner and
operator of post-secondary schools, which was sold in August 2004), Pacific
Media Group (a publisher of community newspapers and a commercial printer
based in the Seattle, Washington area which was sold in December 2005),
Ruxton Health Care (an owner and operator of long-term care facilities,
which was sold in January 2003), National Mobile Television (the
nation’s largest mobile television production company, which was sold
in January 1997), Legend Medical Services, Inc. (an owner and operator of
long-term care nursing facilities which was sold in August 1994)), and of
Calendar Broadcasting and June Broadcasting (both of which owned and
operated commercial radio stations and which were sold in November 1999 and
September 1994).
At Adler & Shaykin, Mr. Murphy was responsible for and was
a director of Addiction Recovery Corporation (a national chain of drug and
alcohol rehabilitation centers), the Folger Adam Company (a major
manufacturer of locks and locking devices for the correctional and
architectural markets), International Health Care Corporation (a
diversified healthcare delivery company), and Peterson Outdoor Advertising
Corporation (an Orlando, Florida-based outdoor media company).
At Citicorp, Mr. Murphy was responsible for Citicorp Venture
Capital’s investments in Price Communications Corp. (a
management-leveraged buyout of radio and TV broadcasting properties), National Psychiatric Institutes (an owner
and operator of psychiatric hospitals), and Columbia Data Products, Inc. (a
venture capital investment in IBM compatible microcomputers). Mr. Murphy served as a director of CDP.
Mr. Murphy received his MBA from the Amos Tuck School of
Business Administration at Dartmouth
College (1975), and
holds an AB from the College of the Holy Cross (1973). Mr. Murphy was formerly president and
serves as a director of the New York Venture Capital Forum. He has also served as Chairman of the
Board of Minority Equity Capital Co., a New York-based minority enterprise
small business investment company.
Mr. Murphy is currently a Trustee of the College of the Holy Cross
and serves as chair of its Investment Committee. He is also a trustee of
the Foundation for Nativity Miguel Schools
and an Honorary Usher of St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City.
